In 2022, DARP – De Arquitectura y Paisaje unveiled the Gran Colombiano Park, a monumental project aimed at preserving heritage and fostering reconciliation in Villa del Rosario, Colombia. Lead architects Jaime Eduardo Cabal Mejía and Jorge Emilio Buitrago Gutiérrez spearheaded this endeavor, commemorating the signing of the 1821 constitution and honoring General Santander, a key figure in Colombia’s independence movement.
Blending Heritage and Site
Situated less than two kilometers from the Colombian-Venezuelan border, the Gran Colombiano Park stands as a symbol of unity amidst social, political, and environmental tensions. It comprises four real estates of cultural interest designated by the Ministry of Culture, showcasing the rich history of the region. A longitudinal structure and transversal elements harmonize the park’s layout, creating connections at various scales and emphasizing its cultural significance.
A Decade of Restoration
The project’s inception dates back to a public competition in 2012, with execution spanning over ten years in multiple phases. DARP’s holistic approach considers both built and natural heritage, incorporating sustainable construction practices to preserve historical value. Three key actions guide the project’s implementation:
- Promoting Accessibility to Heritage: By reorganizing park routes and enhancing pedestrian pathways, the project revitalizes the sites while fostering inclusivity and community engagement. Low-impact infrastructures blend seamlessly with the surroundings, encouraging social interaction and reclaiming spaces once marked by segregation.
- Reconnecting Natural and Urban Systems: Recognizing environmental assets, such as the park’s wooded area and century-old royal palms, the project restores ecological balance and integrates the park with the urban fabric. Safe pedestrian crossings and road mitigations enhance connectivity, bridging the gap between natural and urban environments.
- Community Engagement: Through extensive consultation processes, the project embraces community feedback and fosters a sense of ownership among residents. Preservation of vernacular construction traditions and educational initiatives empower local communities, instilling pride in their cultural heritage.
