In 2016, the City Council of Panevėžys embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize the main city square, known as Freedom Square. Spearheaded by 501 architects, the ambitious project aimed to create a vibrant and inviting public space that would foster community engagement and outdoor activities for residents.
A Vision for Transformation
The existing condition of Freedom Square did not align with the city’s vision of a modern, dynamic urban center. Despite its historical significance, the square lacked attractiveness and failed to draw people beyond mere passersby. Recognizing the potential to elevate Panevėžys as a regional hub, the City Council envisioned a revitalized square that would reflect contemporary European standards of urban living.
Balancing Tradition with Innovation
As the architects embarked on the design process, they faced the challenge of preserving the square’s historic layout while infusing it with modern amenities and playful design elements. The team embraced the existing features of the square, including its open spaces and mature trees, and strategically integrated subtle architectural innovations to enhance its appeal.
Enhancing Functionality and Accessibility
Central to the redesign was the reimagining of the square’s central area, which was previously underutilized. By dividing it into smaller islands, each with specific functions such as children’s playgrounds and quiet retreats, the architects created a more diverse and engaging space. Additionally, the event space underwent a comprehensive restructuring to improve accessibility and sightlines, creating a seamless connection between the historic theater and Senvagė park.

Throughout the project, the architects encountered various technical and logistical challenges, from executing curved corten steel constructions to coordinating with stakeholders and contractors. However, their commitment to precision and innovation allowed them to overcome these obstacles and deliver a project of exceptional quality.
