Preserving Heritage: Kobe Hyogo House Renovation

Project Overview

In 2023, YYA / Yusuke Yoshino Architects embarked on a renovation project in Kobe City, Japan, aiming to restore a neglected childhood home to its former glory. Led by Mohsen Khazdooz and Adib Iravani, the project breathed new life into the dwelling, honoring the client’s cherished memories and cultural heritage.

Reimagining Spaces

Situated in the quaint town of Seishin-Chuo, the client’s childhood home stood as a testament to bygone days. The renovation sought to modernize the space while preserving its historical significance and unique character. The project’s vision was to create an architecture rooted in the client’s essence, seamlessly blending past, present, and future.

Nostalgic Inspiration

Upon surveying the site, the team was struck by the distinctive light green exterior walls, evoking memories of the client’s wife’s hometown in Okinawa. Inspired by the emerald-green ocean, the renovation aimed to encapsulate the essence of Okinawa’s natural beauty and serenity, infusing the home with a sense of tranquility and nostalgia.

Material Selection

To realize the vision of the project, Towada stone was chosen as the primary material. Renowned for its porous texture and natural warmth, Towada stone imbued the space with a sense of authenticity and timelessness. By incorporating this traditional material, the renovation paid homage to the region’s rich architectural heritage.

Seamless Integration

The interior and exterior spaces were seamlessly integrated, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. The use of Towada stone throughout the home created a harmonious flow, while the ricin finish of the exterior walls extended into the interior, forging a continuous relationship between the two realms.

Legacy of Renewal

Through meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design, the renovated house stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of preservation and renewal. As the home is passed down through generations, it carries not only the memories of its current owners but also the spirit of reinvention and resilience, ensuring its legacy for years to come.
