Pereiro Do Cha House: A Harmonious Retreat in Portugal's Alentejo Region

Introduction

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Alentejo, Portugal, Pereiro Do Cha House stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and harmonious integration with nature. Designed by Valerio Olgiati and completed in 2021, this remarkable residence epitomizes tranquility and sophistication.

Location and Setting

Situated approximately 10 kilometers from the ocean, Pereiro Do Cha House enjoys the vast expanse of Alentejo’s rural landscape. Surrounded by cork oaks and nestled amidst hills, the house is secluded at the end of a dirt road, offering privacy and serenity.

Architectural Design

At the heart of this wild, hilly landscape lies a raised platform adorned with a garden and a pavilion-like house. Protective walls of varying heights encircle the platform, creating a distinct spatial experience that seamlessly blends with the surrounding environment. The strategic placement of these walls enhances the perception of the landscape, enriching the overall ambiance of the property.

Integration with Nature

Upon entering through the gate, visitors are greeted by the shimmering blue quartzite of the pool, reflecting the serene beauty of the surroundings. Inside the house, a room with a concrete sofa offers the only opening to the north, providing panoramic views of the illuminated garden and pool against the backdrop of the untamed landscape.

Spatial Organization

Pereiro Do Cha House eschews traditional internal corridors in favor of a garden path system that connects the various rooms. This unique design ensures ample shade during the scorching summer months while allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the rooms during the cooler winter season. The seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces enhances the overall sense of tranquility and connection with nature.

Conclusion

Pereiro Do Cha House stands as a masterpiece of contemporary architecture, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings to create a harmonious retreat in the heart of Alentejo. With its thoughtful design, strategic placement, and integration with nature, this exceptional residence offers a sanctuary where residents can truly reconnect with the essence of the Portuguese countryside.
