Blending Home and Studio: The Ocarina House in Colombia

Introduction

Designed by LCLA Office and completed in 2023, the Ocarina House in Colombia stands as a testament to the seamless integration of art, living, and nature. This compact 40-square-meter space serves not only as a residence but also as an artist’s gallery, reflecting the unique vision of its inhabitant.

Artistic Living

The Ocarina House was envisioned for an artist who sought to reside near their studio in the countryside. Embracing a dual purpose, the space is ingeniously designed to accommodate living quarters, exhibitions, and workspaces. Even intimate areas like the open shower serve as exhibition spaces for the artist’s large ceramic pieces, blurring the lines between art and daily life.

Contextual Harmony

Situated at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, the house is nestled on a sloping plot in a region renowned for its pottery and clay craftsmanship. The structure, partially sunken and constructed of brick, pays homage to the local tradition while mitigating the need for deep concrete foundations in an earthquake-prone area. By embedding a significant portion of the total volume, the house harmoniously interacts with the clay soil, embodying a symbiotic relationship with its surroundings.

Sustainable Features

Rainwater collected from the roof nourishes a lush wet garden surrounding the house, fostering biodiversity and ecological sustainability. A unique structural element not only stabilizes the building but also serves as a conduit for watering the garden, enhancing its functionality while minimizing environmental impact.

Integration with Landscape

The landscape, carefully cultivated with trees anticipating the house’s construction, now boasts young trees that mirror the house’s roofline. These rapidly growing trees not only provide a striking visual contrast against the agricultural backdrop but also further integrate the house with its natural environment, blurring the boundaries between built and natural landscapes.

Conclusion

The Ocarina House exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of art, architecture, and nature. By seamlessly blending living spaces with artistic expression and sustainable design principles, this unique dwelling embodies the essence of creativity and environmental stewardship. It stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture to inspire, uplift, and connect us to our surroundings.
