Rediscovering Urban Living: Cravinhos Apartment in São Paulo

Embracing Urban Proximity

In São Paulo, there’s a growing appreciation for small-scale buildings nestled amidst the bustling streets and verdant tree canopies. These structures offer residents a unique connection to the city, fostering a sense of belonging that transcends the typical apartment dwelling experience.

Transforming Space into Home

The Cravinhos Apartment, a collaborative project by Helena Meirelles arquitetura and Rodrigo Quintella Messina, epitomizes this ethos of urban intimacy. Situated atop the Cravinhos Building, the project posed a fundamental question: How can a mere apartment be transformed into a true home?

Unveiling Unexpected Treasures

During the renovation process, the design team stumbled upon a remarkable discovery—a four-water-trussed wooden roof adorned with intricately carved joints and tie rods. This testament to artisanal craftsmanship served as the cornerstone of the project, inspiring a reimagining of the apartment’s spatial identity.

Integration and Innovation

To honor this architectural gem, the team demolished portions of the stucco and repurposed clay brick masonry to construct a new infrastructure core. This central element, housing the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, and closet, became the focal point around which the entire apartment was organized. A metal structure was ingeniously integrated to create a mezzanine, providing additional space for a versatile workspace.

From Evidence to Essence

The essence of the Cravinhos Apartment lies in its ability to transcend the confines of traditional urban living. By embracing unexpected encounters and reinterpreting spatial dynamics, the project achieves more than mere renovation—it breathes life into space, transforming it into a sanctuary that embodies the true spirit of home.
