Modernizing Spaces: Guarapari Apartment Renovation

Introduction

The Guarapari Apartment, originally built in the 1970s in São Paulo, underwent a thoughtful renovation to meet the needs of a young family. Collaboratively designed by Arquipélago Arquitetos and Pianca Arquitetura, the project aimed to preserve the essence of the original floor plan while infusing modern updates.

Restoring Original Vision

Central to the renovation was the restoration of the original floor plan by architect Ruy Ohtake. This involved maintaining the spatial layout while incorporating specific updates to enhance the functionality of the modernist dwelling.

Reimagined Materiality

A fresh approach to materiality transformed the living spaces of the apartment. The curved wall enclosing the dining and living room was elevated by detaching its top from the ceiling and finishing it with tauari wood panels. This subtle modification created a seamless connection to the kitchen through a discreet passageway. The retention of amber film on the windows bathes the living spaces in a soft, warm glow, complemented by satin white planes, wooden furniture, and accents of anodized aluminum.

Harmonious Design Elements

A white concrete slab serves as a unifying element, tracing the edges of the living room and office before reappearing in the bar worktop. The application of a rough texture to the ceiling pays homage to the domestic ambiance of São Paulo architecture from the original project period. In contrast, the kitchen and laundry room feature stainless steel worktops and light-colored furniture, adding a contemporary twist to the apartment’s aesthetic.

Intimate Outdoor Spaces

The apartment’s intimate balcony, accessible only from the bedrooms, offers a serene retreat from the bustling metropolis. Adorned with pink ceramic tiles and smooth benches, this outdoor oasis provides a tranquil setting for leisure and relaxation.

Conclusion

The Guarapari Apartment renovation seamlessly blends modern updates with the timeless charm of its original design. Through thoughtful restoration and reimagined materiality, Arquipélago Arquitetos and Pianca Arquitetura have crafted a space that not only meets the functional needs of its occupants but also celebrates the rich architectural heritage of São Paulo.
