Redefining Borders through Architectural Elements
The Entrance of Mehregan Neighborhood in Royan, Iran, stands as a testament to the innovative approach of Zand Harirchi Architects. Covering an area of 175 m² and completed in 2022, the project redefines the conventional notion of ‘border’ by seamlessly blending elements such as shape, positive and negative space, material, light, skyline, and surfaces.
Architectural Objectives: Creating a Pause in Space
The primary goal of the project was to craft a distinctive experience of ‘entering a space’ by introducing a sense of pause. Rooted in the concept of transparency, the building fosters a visual connection between occupants and the surrounding environment, erasing the traditional boundary between inner and outer spaces.
Harnessing Light for Spatial Transformation
Recognizing light as a transformative element, the architects strategically employed it to modify the perception of space. The interplay between light and indoor/outdoor surfaces alters occupants’ spatial perception. During the night, the building illuminates, defining its edges and imparting a unique nocturnal atmosphere distinct from the daytime. This strategic use of lighting not only contributes to the building’s aesthetics but also serves as a guiding beacon in the dark.
Innovative Construction Methods: Metal Frames and Precision
The construction phase posed a significant challenge, requiring meticulous material and method selection to ensure both quality and construction feasibility. Opting for metal frames and 10 mm sheets, the architects manufactured the entire entrance building in 29 individual pieces at a workshop in Tehran. The frames, treated with an industrial color, were then transported to the construction site and assembled on the foundation, showcasing an innovative and efficient construction approach.
Zand Harirchi Architects, led by Zand Harirchi and Mohammadreza Noormohammadi, successfully realized the vision of redefining borders and creating a harmonious space that transcends traditional architectural constraints. The Entrance of Mehregan Neighborhood not only reflects the architects’ mastery in shaping spatial experiences but also stands as an emblem of innovation and precision in construction methodologies.
