Enhancing Urban Connectivity: Dongguan Slow-Traffic System

In Dongguan, China, eLandscript Studio spearheaded a transformative project aimed at improving urban connectivity amidst the burgeoning manufacturing industry. With an influx of talent and increased infrastructure development, the need for enhanced pedestrian and slow-traffic systems became apparent. The studio’s visionary approach culminated in the Dongguan Slow-Traffic System, a dynamic network spanning 3 kilometers across the city’s central zone.

Vision: Social Loop & Green Necklace

Guided by the vision of “Social Loop & Green Necklace,” the project sought to address three key aspects: disconnected urban points, areas ripe for value augmentation, and fragmented green corridors. By integrating vertical lift cores with retail spaces, the plan aimed to revitalize the urban landscape and foster a more vibrant Dongguan.

Social Loop: Bridging Urban Landmarks

The 1.5-kilometer-long Social Loop connects prominent landmarks such as Central Park, Civic Center, and commercial complexes. Bridge No. 2, with a maximum span of 103.5 meters, incorporates a continuous steel beam structure and an elegant 10-meter arch supported by 54 cables. Flower boxes and viewing platforms adorn the bridge, providing spaces for leisure and contemplation. Bridge No. 1, designed for the park section, seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, offering a shared public space for residents and visitors alike.

Green Necklace: Nature Integration

The 1.5-kilometer-long Green Necklace weaves through urban and natural landscapes, connecting Central Park with mountain trails. This tree canopy bridge serves as a vital link between the city core and its surrounding greenery. Entrances in the Xigualing area prioritize accessibility and feature tree-canopy stages, pergola trellises, and platforms connected with subway lifts. The design preserves existing trees and aims to provide functional spaces that cater to the needs of local communities.

A Visionary Urban Intervention

The Dongguan Slow-Traffic System by eLandscript Studio represents a paradigm shift in urban planning, emphasizing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and green spaces. By seamlessly blending architectural innovation with environmental consciousness, the project not only enhances connectivity but also fosters a sense of community and well-being in the heart of Dongguan.
