Nestled in Williston, United States, the Annex Studio & Gallery stands as a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and nature. Designed by Birdseye and completed in 2022, this space serves as a showcase for the captivating works of Vermont stone sculptor Richard Erdman.

Inspirations and Collaborations

Richard Erdman’s deep connection to the mountains of Southern Vermont’s Marble region inspired his lifelong passion for sculpting stone. The studio, designed collaboratively with the artist, embodies Erdman’s vision of presenting his creations in harmony with the natural environment. Drawing inspiration from Donald Judd’s philosophy of integrating art with space, the Annex Studio & Gallery offers a unique setting for visitors to appreciate Erdman’s artistry.

Architectural Design

Situated on a 20-acre working horse farm, the studio is strategically positioned to offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The building’s design, inspired by both the agrarian setting and Erdman’s sculptural language, features a blend of rectilinear and curved forms. A striking Corten steel shed defines the gallery space, seamlessly transitioning into a curved office volume that mirrors the fluidity of Erdman’s sculptures.

Interior Spaces

The interior of the studio exudes simplicity and openness, allowing Erdman’s sculptures to take center stage. Structural steel members are left exposed, emphasizing the building’s industrial aesthetic. Monumental steel shelving displays complement the space, while custom metal pivot doors lead into the gallerist area. Minimalistic finishes, including black walls and ceilings, provide the perfect backdrop for Erdman’s marble sculptures.

Sustainability Features

Ecological sensitivity was a key consideration in the design and construction of the Annex Studio & Gallery. The building operates entirely on electricity, eliminating the use of fossil fuels on-site. A ground-mounted PV array provides renewable energy, while an electric heat pump system ensures efficient heating and cooling. Natural plaster and Swedish pine tar finishes contribute to healthy indoor air quality, while permeable stone surfaces help manage runoff and erosion.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Annex Studio & Gallery stands as a testament to the seamless integration of art, architecture, and sustainability. By creating a space that celebrates Erdman’s sculptures while respecting the surrounding landscape, Birdseye has crafted a truly exceptional environment where art and nature converge harmoniously.
