Designed by Nhoow Architects and brought to life in 2023, this establishment, known as Judo Espresso Dojo, is more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee—it’s a community hub where individuals can unwind and find solace amidst the bustling cityscape.
Conceptual Inspiration
The inception of Judo Espresso Dojo draws inspiration from director Du Qifeng’s poignant words in the film “Throw Down”: “Judo teaches you to fall.” Embracing this philosophy, the owner envisioned a space exuding comfort and warmth, inviting patrons to feel at ease and discover their own path within the realm of “Judo.”
Unveiling Authenticity
Unlike conventional coffee shops that boast polished exteriors, Judo Espresso Dojo takes a bold approach by stripping away layers to reveal its raw essence. Reminiscent of a construction site office or a secluded alley, the design exposes the underlying framework, symbolizing the authenticity and vitality concealed beneath the city’s glossy facade.
Design Elements
The design ethos of Judo Espresso Dojo revolves around simplicity and functionality. Ceramic tiles were removed to expose the original wall, while glass magnesium fireproof boards were meticulously incorporated for practicality. Recycled gangboards adorn the floor, evoking a sense of industrial charm, while the furniture, crafted from aluminum profiles and paint-free boards, exudes understated elegance.
Minimalistic Signage
Eschewing traditional signboards, the entrance of Judo Espresso Dojo features a display of rectangular tube keel, embodying the ethos of “less is more.” This intentional omission of ostentatious signage underscores the establishment’s commitment to authenticity and unpretentiousness.
Innovative Door Curtains
Adding a touch of creativity, the door curtains, designed by fashion luminary Wang Yuanyuan, serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. Perforated translucent edges, adorned with polyester braided rope and angle steel, facilitate airflow while allowing users to adjust the ambiance according to seasonal variations.
