Project Background
Originally constructed in the late 1920s, the Manna Sanatorium in Arcadia, Greece, served as a refuge for tuberculosis patients seeking solace amidst the scenic woods. Designed by Swiss architects, it deviated from the neoclassical trends prevalent in the region at the time. However, advancements in medicine rendered sanatoriums obsolete, leading to Manna’s abandonment and subsequent deterioration.
Conceptual Reinvention
To breathe new life into Manna and honor its rich history of hospitality and wellness, K-Studio embarked on a journey to reimagine the property as a modern sanctuary. Drawing inspiration from its secluded location and architectural heritage, the team sought to create a contemporary yet respectful continuation of its legacy.
Architectural Interventions
Preserving the building’s original identity while bridging a century-long gap required a delicate balance of restoration and innovation. Through meticulous interventions, K-Studio aimed to showcase the monumental heritage of the structure while infusing it with a contemporary sensibility.
Hospitality Experience
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into a cozy space adorned with local treats and a crackling fireplace, setting the tone for an authentic hospitality experience. The Lounge area features a bar designed in an apothecary style, paying homage to the property’s healing past. An open Kitchen invites guests to participate in meal preparation, fostering a sense of community.
Room Design
Each of the 32 rooms features a timber space grid reflected in floor patterns of terrazzo and marble, organizing sub-areas for sleep, bathing, and dressing. Signature original elements, such as iron doors with exquisite detailing, are preserved and integrated into the design.
Material Palette
The revival of Manna hinges on a subtle reinvention of its material palette. Natural finishes, sourced locally, adorn both interior and exterior spaces, while careful attention is paid to repurposing existing materials. Metal muntin windows complement the palette, while vegan leathers age gracefully, enhancing the beauty of natural processes.
Establishing a Sanctuary
Manna aspires to become a timeless sanctuary, fostering community in gathering spaces while preserving the isolation that characterized its sanatorium days. Grand common areas coexist with secluded spots, providing opportunities for both connection and introspection. The F&B venue and spa aim to be standalone attractions, offering elevated experiences rooted in ritual and tradition.
The Manna Hotel by K-Studio embodies a harmonious blend of past and present, inviting guests to embark on a journey of rejuvenation and discovery amidst the picturesque landscape of Arcadia, Greece.
