Introduction
NOT A HOTEL ANYWHERE is a pioneering project initiated by DDAA, aiming to reimagine traditional living spaces through the innovative use of vintage trailers. With a focus on mobility and location independence, this experimental endeavor offers a unique way of living that transcends conventional boundaries.
Concept and Design
The project originated from a desire to create a more flexible and fulfilling lifestyle, free from the constraints of fixed locations. DDAA proposed the transformation of vintage trailers into five distinct living spaces, each dedicated to a specific function such as bedroom, study, kitchen, bath, and sunakku (snack bar). By integrating essential functionalities into each vehicle, residents have the freedom to choose their living environment based on their needs and preferences.
Architectural Features
The refurbished trailers, including two manufactured by Spartan and three by Airstream, underwent meticulous redesign to optimize functionality while retaining their vintage charm. To ensure adaptability to diverse environments, DDAA prioritized a universal design approach, emphasizing a seamless blend with the surrounding landscape. The integration of necessary functions below waist level and the preservation of the trailers’ original texture exemplify this design ethos.
Incorporating Sunakku
At the client’s request, DDAA incorporated a sunakku into one of the trailers, paying homage to Japan’s unique night culture. The sunakku features distinctive decor, high stools upholstered in velvet, and karaoke facilities, creating an immersive atmosphere reminiscent of traditional hostess bars.
Overcoming Challenges
The project posed several challenges, including the integration of essential infrastructure for off-grid living while maintaining mobility. DDAA devised innovative solutions to camouflage structural constraints, ensuring a seamless interior layout. Additionally, a strategic approach to infrastructure organization enabled compatibility with existing systems while offering off-grid capabilities.
