Roastery and Cafe

The LIGHT-UP COFFEE shop features two distinct floors, each serving a unique purpose. The first floor, doubling as a roasting space and cafe, offers ample seating for patrons to indulge in freshly brewed coffee while witnessing the roasting process firsthand. Meanwhile, the second floor is dedicated to packing, shipping, and administrative tasks, ensuring the smooth operation of the establishment.

Embracing History and Romance

The inspiration behind the LIGHT-UP COFFEE shop stems from the acquisition of a vintage 1960s German roasting machine, affectionately named “Probat UG22.” This historical artifact, acquired from a store with a rich coffee heritage, serves as the centerpiece of the establishment. By integrating the roasting process into the cafe space without partitioning, Spicy Architects creates an immersive experience that celebrates the legacy of coffee craftsmanship.

Creating a Sense of Community

Formerly an auto body shop, the building’s design allows for seamless integration with the surrounding neighborhood. The front facade, adorned with retractable shutters, creates an open and inviting space that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments. Dubbed the “street lounge,” this area fosters casual interactions between patrons and passersby, enriching the community fabric.

Thoughtful Design Elements

Within the cafe space, meticulous attention to detail is evident. A symbolic KIOSK faces the street, juxtaposing the commanding presence of the roasting machine. A communal 4-meter-long table encourages conversation among patrons and staff, fostering a sense of camaraderie. Crafted from solid cedar wood, the interior exudes warmth and authenticity, inviting guests to linger and savor their coffee experience.

Seamless Integration

By harmonizing the roasting space with the cafe, LIGHT-UP COFFEE Mitaka creates a symbiotic relationship between patrons, artisans, and the art of coffee. Through the melding of tradition and modernity, Spicy Architects has crafted a sanctuary where coffee aficionados and casual drinkers alike can come together to celebrate the timeless allure of this beloved beverage.
