Introduction
Situated in the Zhulongshan Scenic Spot of Rizhao, Shandong Province, this project by hyperSity architects transforms an open field into a BMX arena and training ground for the Provincial Games 2022. Embracing the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and sea, the site offers a picturesque backdrop for sports and cultural events.
Innovative Design Approach
Drawing inspiration from traditional rural architecture, the design reimagines common building materials to create a new prototype of countryside structures. Facing the wheat and sorghum fields and nestled against the Zhulongshan Mountain range, the building opens up towards the landscape while providing a closed area for referees on the north side. The integration of light and views enhances the spatial experience, with a central black core tube serving as the building’s service space.
Architectural Features
The grandstand building, positioned to overlook the sea, offers panoramic views of five distinct worlds. Its dynamic design fosters a sense of community among urbanized youth through vibrant sports events. By leveraging the agricultural landscape for commercial value, the grandstand serves as a catalyst for social cohesion, bringing together diverse resources and stakeholders.
Social Impact
As a hub for sports and cultural activities, the grandstand project transcends its functional role to become a symbol of unity and integration. By bridging urban and rural landscapes, it catalyzes economic development and community engagement, shaping a vibrant cultural ecosystem that benefits residents and visitors alike.
Conclusion
In redefining the boundaries between sports, culture, and nature, the grandstand project in Rizhao exemplifies the transformative power of architectural innovation. By embracing local materials and traditions while embracing modern design principles, it paves the way for sustainable development and inclusive growth in rural communities.
