Introduction
Nestled amidst the picturesque hills of Rwanda near the village of Masoro, the Learning and Sports Center stands as a beacon of community engagement and empowerment. Designed by General Architecture Collaborative (GAC), this multifaceted facility transcends its role as a mere library, offering a diverse array of recreational, educational, and wellness amenities to the local residents, all within a safe and welcoming environment.
Design and Features
Spanning an area of 1100 square meters, the Center encompasses a library, classrooms, technology education rooms, indoor and outdoor exercise spaces, community teaching gardens, outdoor theaters, a basketball court, and a soccer field. Embracing an inclusive approach, these facilities are accessible to all community members free of charge, fostering a spirit of equality and opportunity.
Sustainable Construction and Community Engagement
During the construction phase, GAC prioritized community involvement by employing 390 builders from the surrounding region, with over half of them being women. These builders received comprehensive training in sustainable construction techniques, including ModernBrick construction methods, recycled bitchumen roofs, and woven walls using locally-sourced materials such as grasses and bark. Moreover, off-grid infrastructures such as rainwater harvesting and biodigesters were integrated into the design, ensuring environmental sustainability.
Community Partnership and Empowerment
GAC collaborated closely with community leaders and NGOs specializing in education and healthcare to ensure that the Center met the evolving needs of the local population. Post-construction, GAC facilitated the training and employment of local managers who now oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center served as a vital hub for disseminating information, distributing essential supplies, and providing nutritional support to vulnerable community members.
Inclusive and Sustainable Legacy
Through its inclusive design and collaborative construction process, the Learning and Sports Center has become a cornerstone of community life, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among its members. Today, the Center continues to serve as a shared common ground where community members gather, learn, and grow together, embodying the principles of sustainability, empowerment, and inclusivity.
