Context and Inspiration

Nestled amidst the mountains of Jieba Township, Shannan City, the Beehive Observation Project stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Originally an orchard tended by the Tibetan ancestors of Jieba Township, this area has evolved into a vital honey bee foraging ground. Commissioned to design a space that celebrates the life of bees and offers visitors an immersive honey harvesting experience, OMNO Lab embarked on a journey to create a sustainable cultural architecture that resonates with the local environment.

Sustainable Design Approach

Given the delicate ecology of the high-altitude plateau, sustainability was paramount in the design process. OMNO Lab prioritized local materials and eco-friendly construction techniques to minimize the project’s environmental footprint. Black carbonized wood, known for its corrosion resistance, was selected as the primary building material to withstand the region’s intense ultraviolet radiation and minimal precipitation. The use of black color not only blends the structure into the forested surroundings but also establishes a striking visual identity.

Traditional Influence and Modern Interpretation

Drawing inspiration from traditional Tibetan architecture, the design incorporates lightweight wooden components reminiscent of the robustness of brick and stone walls. The exterior pays homage to the inclined forms and fish scale-like patterns found in Tibetan residences, facilitating the free movement of bees while evoking the solidity of traditional architecture. This fusion of traditional aesthetics with modern construction techniques creates a visually captivating structure that honors the cultural heritage of the region.

Contradictory Ambiance and Harmonious Elements

Internally, the Beehive Observation Project embodies a contradictory ambiance—transparent yet enclosed, resembling a sacred sanctuary for bees. While external symmetry invites observers from afar, internal asymmetry reveals itself upon closer inspection. Red porous bricks, chosen for their ability to harmonize with the rural landscape, adorn the flooring, accentuating the entrance with a striking red and black color scheme.

Roof Design and Community Collaboration

The roof design incorporates elements of traditional Tibetan architecture, including the distinctive Han-Tibetan-style eaves structure. Bare aluminum panels mimic traditional roofing materials while diffusing sunlight through curved shapes, ensuring balanced natural light within. Embracing a collaborative approach to construction, local villagers and carpenters worked alongside architects to assemble the structure using prefabricated materials, fostering community engagement and cultural preservation.

Conclusion: A Tribute to Nature and Tradition

The Beehive Observation Project exemplifies the seamless integration of architectural innovation with environmental consciousness. By embracing local traditions and sustainable practices, OMNO Lab has created a cultural landmark that celebrates the intricate relationship between humans, bees, and the natural world. As visitors engage with the immersive experience of honey harvesting, they are invited to reconnect with nature and appreciate the beauty of traditional Tibetan craftsmanship.
