Located in Bangkok, Thailand, the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC) stands as a testament to architectural innovation and cultural homage. Designed by onion and completed in 2022, this expansive project spans an area of 130,000 square meters and serves as a beacon of Thailand’s rich heritage and forward-thinking design ethos.

Historical Context

Initially constructed in 1991 to host the 46th Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group, QSNCC underwent a significant expansion and renovation in 2019, culminating in its reopening in September 2022. Throughout the three-year construction period, onion collaborated closely with engineers, construction teams, and a consortium of designers to realize a vision that pays homage to Thai artistry and craftsmanship while embracing modern architectural principles.

Design Inspiration

Central to the design ethos of QSNCC is the celebration of Queen Sirikit’s legacy and her profound impact on Thai culture and craftsmanship. As a pioneer in promoting Thai arts and crafts on the global stage, Queen Sirikit’s influence is palpable throughout the convention centre’s design. Drawing inspiration from her iconic outfits, which seamlessly blend traditional weaving techniques with contemporary aesthetics, onion sought to infuse each aspect of QSNCC’s design with a sense of elegance and cultural resonance.

Architectural Elements

From the majestic travertine stone cladding adorning the Exhibition Halls to the intricate patterns inspired by Queen Sirikit’s attire, every architectural element at QSNCC is imbued with symbolism and purpose. The use of curved and angled joints in the travertine stone pays homage to traditional Thai patterns, while gold trims on the ceilings echo the intricate detailing of Queen Sirikit’s Chitlada dress. Similarly, the lower ground level features a dominant staircase inspired by Queen Sirikit’s casual Thai black and white loincloth patterned coat, creating a seamless blend of tradition and modernity.

Interior Design

The interior spaces of QSNCC are a testament to onion’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to sustainability. Conference rooms and multi-purpose halls are adorned with reimagined Thai patterns, meticulously applied to ceilings, walls, and partitions, creating a sense of cohesion and spatial harmony. The Ballroom Hall, inspired by Queen Sirikit’s Hill Tribe pattern attire, features abstracted geometrical patterns infused with silver leaves, paying homage to Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.

Vertical Circulation Enclosures

Even the vertical circulation enclosures at QSNCC bear the imprint of Thai tradition, with partitions adorned with the prajayam pattern embellished with golden leaf motifs, symbolizing sacredness and respect. Silver leaves adorning elevator shafts serve as a visual marker of transition, seamlessly integrating tradition with modernity.

Conclusion

Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre stands as a testament to Thailand’s vibrant cultural heritage and its commitment to architectural excellence. With its meticulous craftsmanship, thoughtful design elements, and homage to Queen Sirikit’s legacy, QSNCC is not just a convention centre but a cultural landmark that celebrates the intersection of tradition and modernity.
