Situated in the heart of Shanghai, the Hunan Street Public Service Station underwent a remarkable transformation led by Steamarch architects. Originally comprising public toilets, a garbage transfer station, and a janitor’s lounge, the outdated building struggled to meet the evolving demands of the community and local authorities. In response to a public call for proposals, our renovation plan, characterized by innovative design solutions, was selected for implementation after rigorous evaluation and public voting.

Redefining Urban Experience

The renovation design aimed to redefine the public service station’s image and enhance the urban experience by seamlessly integrating dynamic architectural elements and public amenities. A striking visual connection was established between the cityscape and the building, with a prominent focus on the installation of a public hand-washing sink. Through strategic spatial rearrangement, the renovated station now blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, both in scale and form.

User-Centric Approach

With a strong emphasis on user comfort and inclusivity, the renovation project prioritized the needs of all stakeholders, including pets. The second floor was redesigned to provide janitors and managers with a more comfortable and functional workspace. Upon entering the station, visitors are greeted by expansive openings, inviting flower beds, and an inviting interior courtyard, facilitating a seamless transition from public to private spaces.

A Platform for Emerging Talent

Noteworthy for its unique approach, this project stands out as one of the few instances where young architects secured design commissions through an open call. Beyond its architectural significance, the renovation of the Hunan Street Public Service Station exemplifies a broader urban micro-regeneration initiative in Shanghai, underscoring its value in enhancing the built environment and fostering community engagement.

Through innovative design interventions and a commitment to user satisfaction, Steamarch has successfully revitalized the Hunan Street Public Service Station, transforming it into a vibrant and inclusive community hub that reflects the dynamic spirit of Shanghai’s urban landscape.
