Revitalizing Arzamas’ Historic Hub
Historical Tapestry: Arzamas’ Cultural Essence
Arzamas, with its rich cultural traditions and economic history, boasts the Gaidar Park as a cherished recreational haven. Despite its popularity, the park’s infrastructure and programs fell short of contemporary standards for quality public spaces. Recognizing this, municipal authorities, along with the park management team, initiated a renovation drive in response to public demand. IRGSNO, joining the project later, clinched the architectural concept through its entry in the Federal Contest «Small Towns and Historical Settlements».
Collaborative Vision: Public Engagement and Architectural Ingenuity
IRGSNO not only contributed to the architectural concept but also fostered effective communication among various stakeholders. The working group, comprising local authorities, park management, experts, residents, developers, and contractors, played a pivotal role in shaping the project’s trajectory. This inclusive approach formed the backbone of IRGSNO’s methodology.
Stepwise Transformation: The HERO + PLACE Concept
Arkady Gaidar’s Legacy Meets Unique Landscapes
The renovation unfolded in stages, envisioning a multipurpose, year-round, inclusive public space. The initial phase aimed at enriching functional zones and creating a distinctive park identity. The overarching concept blended “the HERO” – Arkady Gaidar, the park’s namesake, with “the PLACE” – the unique clay pits landscape. The renovated park now features zones dedicated to sports, festivals, history, and community engagement.
Unified Aesthetic: Inspired by Arzamas’ Heritage
The architectural ensemble seamlessly integrates materials and forms inspired by Arzamas’ land and history. Ceramic bricks, steel, and wood form the basis of the park’s aesthetic. Referencing the days of clay extraction, ceramic bricks feature prominently in paving and urban furniture. The “Brick” theme echoes in the wooden elements, creating a cohesive visual language. The pavement design pays homage to Arzamas’ historical urban planning.
Community Center: A Clay-Crafted Hub
A focal point of attraction, the community center stands as a multifunctional pavilion with an amphitheater and courtyard. Visitors can engage in clay-related activities, from sculpting to glazing, underscoring the region’s historical connection to clay. The design not only revives the park’s essence but also offers an interactive space for artistic exploration.
Gaidar’s Star: A Literary Playground
In homage to Arkadiy Gaidar, a dedicated kids’ art playground named “Gaidar’s Star” invites young minds to explore the writer’s literary universe. The playground, adorned with art objects representing Gaidar’s characters, stems from public input and a kids’ art contest, showcasing a harmonious blend of creativity and community engagement.

The Gaidar Cultural and Recreational Park’s revitalization in Arzamas exemplifies a thoughtful blend of historical reverence, public participation, and architectural finesse. IRGSNO’s innovative approach not only met contemporary standards but also honored the town’s heritage, creating a renewed space for recreation, cultural celebration, and community interaction.
