Nestled in the quaint town of Seishin-Chuo in Kobe City, Japan, the Kobe Hyogo House Renovation by YYA / Yusuke Yoshino Architects is a testament to the seamless fusion of heritage and modernity. Situated amidst a landscape that exudes rural charm, the project sought to revitalize a neglected family home while honoring its nostalgic roots.

Embracing Heritage in Modernity

The project site, located in a serene corner of Seishin-Chuo, holds sentimental value for the client, who spent cherished childhood moments in the vicinity. Despite its proximity to neighboring houses, the area retains a spacious ambiance, with a park adorning the northern perimeter. This sense of openness inspired the vision for the renovated home.

Bridging Past and Present

The existing home, a relic of the client’s childhood, stood as a testament to bygone memories but had fallen into disrepair over the years. Through meticulous renovation, YYA aimed to breathe new life into the house while preserving its essence. The incorporation of modern conveniences within the traditional framework sought to create a harmonious blend of past and present.

A Tribute to Tradition

One striking feature of the original structure was its light green exterior walls, a testament to the owner’s reverence for antiquity. Drawing inspiration from this, the architects envisioned a design that would pay homage to the verdant landscapes of Okinawa, the client’s wife’s hometown. Towada stone, renowned for its versatility and natural allure, was chosen to encapsulate this vision.

Crafting Timeless Spaces

In reimagining the interior, YYA aimed to evoke the rustic charm of a traditional quarry, where the raw beauty of Towada stone takes center stage. By meticulously layering stone of varying widths and sizes, the architects created a visual narrative that celebrates the craftsmanship of yesteryears. The seamless transition from interior to exterior spaces further accentuates the sense of continuity and spaciousness.

A Legacy Reimagined

As the renovation draws to a close, the Kobe Hyogo House stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of family and tradition. Beyond its physical transformation, the home embodies the cherished memories of generations past, ready to be passed down to future heirs. Through the thoughtful reuse of materials and preservation of nostalgia, YYA has crafted a timeless dwelling that transcends generations.
