Situated in Xili Primary School, Jiuxiangling Kindergarten underwent a transformative renovation led by SUIADR SML Design Studio as part of the 100-school renovation initiative. The kindergarten, originally built in the 1990s from an old factory, faced numerous challenges due to its aging infrastructure and limited outdoor space. However, with meticulous planning and innovative design strategies, the kindergarten was revitalized to provide a vibrant and conducive learning environment for children.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
The original structure of Jiuxiangling Kindergarten exhibited signs of wear and safety concerns, including outdated facilities, inadequate lighting, and cramped spaces. The narrow corridors and lack of outdoor areas restricted children’s movement and activities. Additionally, the presence of old factory buildings and residential structures further limited the kindergarten’s potential for expansion and improvement.
A Vision for Renewal
The renovation project aimed to not only address safety and functionality issues but also to create a welcoming and stimulating environment for children. The design team focused on preserving the kindergarten’s unique characteristics, such as its arcade design and mosaic façade, while integrating modern amenities and spatial enhancements.
Innovative Design Solutions
Drawing inspiration from Victorian architecture in London, the design team employed a steel frame system to create new spaces and improve existing structures. By widening corridors and repurposing them into classrooms, the team optimized the use of space while ensuring compliance with safety standards. The addition of steel staircases and rooftop platforms further expanded activity areas and encouraged outdoor engagement.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite facing challenges such as a short construction period and pandemic-related disruptions, the project was successfully completed through collaboration between SUIADR, construction agent Vanke, and Kingon Decoration Engineering. The active involvement of government departments and park authorities ensured the smooth execution of the design.

With its revitalized infrastructure and expanded outdoor spaces, Jiuxiangling Kindergarten is poised to welcome children with a fresh and dynamic learning environment.
