Architectural Vision Unveiled in Amsterdam

UNStudio, in collaboration with BPD (Bouwfonds Property Development), embarked on a visionary project in 2015 to design the Booking.com City Campus in the heart of Amsterdam. The objective was clear from the outset: to forge a vibrant community, fostering collaboration among employees and attracting top talent globally. This ambitious venture aimed to create not just a headquarters but an unparalleled experience, reflecting Booking.com’s prowess in the tech industry.

A Hub of Innovation and Talent

Booking.com aspired to have its headquarters mirror its prominence in the tech world, serving as a magnet for the industry’s brightest minds. This aspiration became the catalyst for the design process. Extensive research, including visits to successful tech company buildings, laid the groundwork. The challenge was to conceptualize a completely new, innovative, and distinctive architectural paradigm that would set Booking.com apart in attracting and retaining young talent.

Prioritizing Employee Well-being

Central to the design philosophy was the creation of a work environment that prioritizes the social, physical, and mental well-being of Booking.com’s employees. The architecture was conceived to inspire movement, with staircases, bridges, and galleries strategically incorporated across all levels, including the rooftop. The unconventional use of glazed emergency staircases not only promotes daily use but also introduces natural light and scenic views.

Holistic Approach to Sustainability

The campus prioritizes sustainability, earning a prestigious BREEAM Excellent design certificate. Innovative solutions include underfloor air distribution for proximity-based fresh air supply, radiant ceilings for efficient heating and cooling, and meticulous attention to acoustics. Abundant daylight coupled with high-quality artificial lighting enhances visual comfort. The campus also boasts a connected building management system for seamless operations and employee experience.

Collaborative Interior Design Approach

UNStudio led the architectural and urban approach, while the interior masterplan was crafted by Lead Interior Architect HofmanDujardin. The interior design collaboration extended to other firms, such as Studio Modijefsky and i29, resulting in a diverse array of amenities, including 28 micro holiday destination breakout spaces. These themed communal areas provide unique settings for relaxation, dining, and collaborative work.

Flexible Workspaces for a Productive Lifestyle

The expansive and flexible design of the work floors offers a multitude of working and meeting spaces, empowering employees to tailor their workday for optimal productivity. The emphasis on freedom of choice and a healthy work-life balance is evident in the thoughtful design of the campus, reflecting Booking.com’s commitment to a transparent, connected, and future-oriented way of working and living.
